How to Prepare for Your Pet Photo Session (And Actually Enjoy It!)

Whether it's your pup's first time in front of the camera or your cat is already a seasoned model, preparing for your session can make all the difference in how smooth and successful your experience will be.

Here are some easy, stress-free tips to get both you and your furry friend ready for the big day.

1. Take a long walk before your session.

If your pet has some extra energy (we see you, zoomie dogs), a long walk may help settle them down. Think of it as a pre-photo shoot warm-up. For dogs especially, a nice stroll—maybe even a little playtime—helps burn off that “go-go-go” energy so they’re more likely to relax, sit still, and enjoy the experience. Just don’t overdo it—you want them calm, not exhausted.

2. Easy on the Treats

Treats are a great motivator during a session, but moderation is key. Save most of the goodies for the shoot itself so they still have something to be excited about. Overfeeding beforehand can also make pets sluggish or disinterested. A lightly filled belly and a few favorite treats in your pocket is the perfect balance.

I provide a variety of treats. This includes low value treats such as kibble, to high value treats such as cheese.  If your pet has tummy issues, please bring treats for us to use. We don't want to make your furry friend ill.

3. Keep Telling Yourself: This is Stress-Free

Take a deep breath. The best pet photo sessions are the ones where everyone—human and animal alike—is relaxed and having fun. Pets are super intuitive and pick up on our energy fast. If you’re tense, they’ll likely be a little wary too.

Your session is a chance to capture beautiful, joy-filled moments with your best furry friend. There’s no “perfect pose” we’re chasing. The magic often happens in the candid moments.

Tell yourself (and your pet), “This is going to be fun. We’ve got this.”

4. Bring Their Favorite Toys

Does your pet have a beloved toy? A blanket they always nap on? Bring it! Not only do these items help them feel safe and at home, but they also add personality to your photos. Familiar objects can also help hold your pet’s attention and keep them comfortable throughout the session.

5. Groom for the Camera

A quick grooming session before you arrive can make a big visual difference. Think brushed fur, wiped eyes, and clean paws. If your dog tends to get a little drooly or dusty, a towel and some pet wipes in your bag will come in handy.

6. Dress for Comfort and Coordination

If you’re going to be in the photos with your pet, choose clothes you feel great in; and consider colors that won’t clash with your pet’s fur. Neutral colors always work well. Wear something comfortable and easy to move in. We might be sitting on the ground, playing, or chasing a tail or two!

7. Trust Your Photographer

Every pet is different. Some take a few minutes to warm up to the camera; others are born ready for their close-up. Trust that your photographer knows how to read the room, follow your pet’s lead, and capture their true personality, even if it takes a little patience.

Preparing for a pet photo session doesn’t have to be stressful. With a little planning, some deep breaths, and a willingness to roll with whatever happens, you’ll walk away with images that capture your pet’s spirit and personality

So leash up, grab a favorite toy, and get ready to make some memories.
