Introducing Ariel

Meet Ariel a dog whose life was forever changed the day she met Sara. During her “Because of You” portrait session, we explored Ariel’s journey from puppy to therapy dog. Read on to learn about the life she spends with Sara.

MY LIFE AT AUGUSTANA - THE EARLY YEARS

I first met Sara when I was just 8 weeks old. Tiny, adorable, and clearly destined for something important;even if I didn’t quite know what that was yet.

She was part of the Viking Pups Club at Augustana College, and  was looking for a puppy to train. A puppy who would grow up and serve others.

Enter me.

Me and my friends? We were known as the Princess Crew. Yes, I take that title very seriously.

From the very beginning, I worked hard. I went to training classes, practiced all my skills, and even went to Sara’s classes with her. (Even on the days when she didn’t really feel like going. I kept her accountable. You’re welcome, Sara.)

I loved watching her teach and train other dogs. Honestly, I’m her biggest cheerleader.

I’ve been told I’m pretty “chill,” which I think means I’m excellent under pressure. Case in point: one time we went to a hockey game. Loud noises, cheering crowds, all kinds of chaos. I was completely unbothered. I just took it all in like the professional I was becoming.

By the time I turned one, I was ready for my new career.

MY WORK

I spent my days visiting hospitals and libraries; but my absolute favorite? The kids.

Oh, the kids. I lit up every time I saw them. There’s something really special about sitting quietly while a child reads to you. I didn’t just listen, I made them feel brave, confident, and proud. That was my job, and I loved every second of it.

MORE ABOUT ME

I’m what you might call independent. I’m not overly snuggly (don’t make a big deal about it), but I always want to be involved. If Sara is doing something, I’m there. Same room. Same mission.

I love everyone that I meet.

Except cows.

We don’t talk about cows.

Sara calls me her “chaotic good child,” and honestly, she’s not wrong. I’m very good, with a little flair.

For example, when we finish training, I’ll go grab the treat bag and bring it to her. It's my signal to her that we have finished training.

Same with my leash. When I’m ready for our next adventure or it is time to go, I’ll fetch it and take it to her.

Communication is important. And I am very expressive. Sara always knows what I’m thinking. (It’s usually, “Is it time for snacks?” or “Where are we going next?”)

ADVENTURES

Hiking and exploring is one of my absolute favorite things to do. I love my adventures at  Starved Rock State Park and Matthiessen State Park. There are so many paths and things to discover.

I also love swimming and would go whenever I got the chance.

We have a koi pond at home, and in the summer, I’ll stand in the pond watching my fish friends glide around. It’s very peaceful.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Although I’m 11 years old. I still love adventures. They just look a little different now.

We take our time. We move a bit slower. There’s more to see when you’re not rushing. More moments to soak in.

My body might not move as fast as it used to, but my mind? Oh, it’s still ready for anything.

I’m still that same puppy who wanted to learn, to help, to explore.

Thank you Sara for bringing me into your life.

Because of you I am safe.

Because of you I am loved.

Because of you I belong.
