The day no one came for me was the day I found everything

Introducing Benny

From the gas station, to the shelter, to a forever home.

This is the story of Benny whose world circles around one person.

HOW I FOUND MY HOME

Hi. My name is Bently. Everyone who really knows me calls me Benny.

I’m 13 which means I’ve had a lot of time to think about how my story began and how lucky I am that it turned out the way it did.

I don’t remember everything from when I was little, but I do remember being hungry. I was just a tiny pup, about three months old, trying to figure out the world one piece of garbage at a time at a gas station. That’s when Hannah’s mom found me. I didn’t know it then, but that moment changed everything.

She took me home and the next day I went to a shelter. The nice people said I had to wait a week before I could find my forever home just in case someone came looking for me.

No one came for me after a week; but Hannah did.

Just like that, I wasn’t alone anymore and had a warm home, someone to love me and was never hungry.

I WAS HER DOG

From the very beginning, I became her dog. Her kid, actually. There weren’t any human kids in the house, so I took that role very seriously.

I had a lot of energy back then and my days were filled with zoomies.

Hannah was the one who helped me learn how to be the best version of myself. She trained me, loved me, and stuck with me until I finally settled down around age three.

Now? I’m her shadow.

Wherever Hannah goes, I go. If she’s sleeping, I’m right beside her. If she’s in the kitchen, I’m supervising. When she walks through the door, I don’t care who else is there, she’s the one I run to first.

And when she’s gone? I wait.

I watch the window. I listen. I don’t really get into my normal routine until she’s back where she belongs.

She says she loves that I’m always by her side; but honestly, I think I’m the lucky one.

WEEKENDS ARE MY FAVORITE

Weekends are my favorite.

You see, I’ve learned something very important over the years. If Hannah isn’t rushing around getting ready for work in the morning, it means one thing.

PUP CUPS!!!!!

I start heading to the door early, just to remind her. If she moves even a little I’m up again, just in case it’s go time.

Eventually, she gets the message, and off we go for my pup cup.

It’s our thing.

A NEW FAMILY MEMBER

About three and a half years ago, something unexpected happened.

A little human joined our family.

I’ll be honest. I wasn’t so sure at first. I had Hannah all to myself, and suddenly I had to share. But over time, I realized something.

This little guy needed me.

So I stepped into a new role.

Not as a brother, but a dad.

I’m patient with him. I watch over him. I make sure he’s okay.

It turns out, loving Hannah also means loving the people she loves.

FINAL THOUGHTS

I do have a few things I’m not a fan of.

Those weird “beeps” that come from phones, scales… anything, really. I don’t trust them. Not one bit. And the vet? Definitely not my favorite place. I also like to take my time getting to know other dogs.

But people? I love people.

Especially my person.

If there’s one thing I want the world to know about dogs like me, it’s this: find yourself a single gal who will make you her whole world.

Because that’s what Hannah did for me. And 13 years later, I’m still her shadow. Still her kid. Still the luckiest dog alive.

Because of you I am safe.

Because of you, I am loved.

Because of you, I belong.

Because of you, I am rescued.
